Thoughts on Indigo Park

While I have some free time waiting for servers to provision at work, I want to quickly talk about Indigo Park.

Quick summary of Indigo Park for the unfamiliar: mascot horror game similar to FNaF that takes place in an abandoned amusement park. If you're in furry circles, you've probably already seen the primary mascot character: Rambley. The game is made by the guy who created the fan-fixed version of Garten of Banban. The game is free and I will not be summarizing it further here.

Much like the rest of the internet, I adore Rambley. He's a fun character and he's animated and voice acted extremely well. I even recreated his train ride animation using my own character (you can find it on my FA).

I really hope that they don't pull a "surprise" twist and make Rambley evil. I haven't heard anything to confirm or deny it besides being aware that game theory made a video with that exact premise. Twist villains like that were interesting at one point, but feel cliche now. I find myself thinking of Yahtzee Crowshaw's recent comments on wanting more clear-cut villains (such as Vandelay from Hi-Fi Rush) because the market is absolutely saturated with more complex villains you can sympathize with.

I normally shy away from horror games, but I made the exception here because

  1. It was free
  2. Rambley was cute
  3. Nobody was claiming it was another Banban

I'm glad I played it because it really was an enjoyable game. If I could critique anything, it would be the graphics: returning to the main square had a lot of pop-in each time I walked into it. But if that's the worst I can come up with, I don't think it's so bad.

The characters are interesting. The puzzles are fine. The chase sequence didn't feel like it relied too much on trial and error. I played it through a second time.

Hopefully chapter 2 has more of an appearance from Salem.
