A Review of Three Art-focused Podcasts

I listen to podcasts during my commute. It's one of the only ways that I can engage with my hobbies during that time. The following are my thoughts on some of the ones I've listened to.

Artholes

Artholes is an art history podcast made by a comedian with multi-episode, long-form dives into one specific artist at a time. It's more like an audiobook than a podcast, but one with a better sense of humor than most. His Jackson Pollock series left me with a greater understanding of the artist, his art style, and what I like in a good podcast.

Unfortunately, his lack of expertise in producing a podcast shows. It's been a while since I've listened to an episode, but I remember being irritated by how often he would interrupt himself with movie sound-bites or an aside about how bad and immoral people were in the past. Additionally, he hasn't uploaded an episode in over a year - a move which makes me question how likely it is that another episode is coming.

Overall, I recommend the podcast and wish it wasn't on haitus for over a year.

3 Point Perspective (SVS Learn)

3PP is an art business podcast that sometimes talks about the art process. The production quality is better than Artholes, but the topics are less interesting to me personally. I only listen to about 20% of the episodes because I don't want to learn about the importance of growing my email list or how to reach out to publishers. It's not a bad podcast - it's just relevant to me.

Draftsmen

Draftsmen with Stan Prokopenko and Marshall Vandruff is an art podcast about making art. Sometimes the topic is how to learn a specific skill (perspective, anatomy). Sometimes it's more about the process around the process (carpal tunnel, critque). Sometimes it's about the business side. Regardless of topic, I usually find value in the episode.

I absolutely adore the way that Marshall talks about art. His stories and anecdotes inspire me as much as they inform me.

It's both my favourite art podcast, and one of my favourite podcasts overall. I just wish it wasn't over.
